PLASMA

THE NEW GOLD STANDARD IS YOU!

Why are AB donors special?

If you are type AB, please consider donating plasma. Plasma of this uncommon blood type, found in only 4 percent of Americans, can be transfused to anyone.

WHEN

trauma victims are rushed to the Emergency Room...when transplant specialists want to give a sick patient a new liver...when cardio-thoracic surgeons open a person’s chest to rebuild a heart...when a child with a rare bleeding disorder suffers massive bleeding...

THEY NEED

the latest technology...the best operating room facilities...the best trained staff...and something only you can provide...

Plasma...

Liquid Gold.

When patients are bleeding, Doctors call for PLASMA.

The clock is ticking...

for trauma and transplant patients.

Excessive bleeding calls for plasma. When doctors treat trauma patients and perform transplants, no advance in technology can replace the critical clotting and immune factors found in voluntarily donated human plasma. And, in an emergency, when patients can’t wait, their doctors call on plasma donors.

For Plasma Donors

In just an hour, no more time than it takes to make a whole blood donation - a single plasma donor can make the difference for a patient in crisis. And because the human body replaces plasma so rapidly, plasmapheresis donors can give twice as often as whole blood donors, up to 12 times a year. That means helping four times as many patients, with no more time spent donating.

Apheresis makes the time savings possible. This special process allows donors to give just the most needed component of blood - in this case, plasma - while the remaining components (red cells and platelets) are returned to the body. Every donation is monitored by a sophisticated computer and friendly, highly trained Red Cross professionals.

About Plasma...

What is Plasma?

Plasma is the clear yellowish fluid portion of the blood that transports water and nutrients to all the cells in the body. It is composed of approximately 90 percent salt water and 10 percent protein and electrolytes. Through the natural metabolic process, aided by a healthy diet, the body generates salt water and protein.

What is the relationship between blood and plasma?

Blood is composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Plasma makes up approximately 55 percent of the volume of blood. About 7 percent of a person’s weight is blood. An average size man has about 12 pints of blood. An average size woman has about 9 pints.

Why should I donate plasma?

The time a person spends donating plasma is valuable. In many cases there is no alternative for these patients who rely on products made from donated plasma.

Who uses plasma?

Hemophiliacs, burn victims, surgery patients and many more.

Becoming a plasma donor is easier than saying "plasmapheresis"!

You must be at least 17 years old.

Weigh at least 110 lbs.
