Platelet Apheresis Donation Checklist
ONGOING
- Take a multivitamin (women may consider taking a multivitamin with iron if instructed to do so by their physicians).
- Drink orange juice or other citrus fruit when taking vitamins to improve absorption.
- Include fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.
- Women may want to avoid donating during or immediately after their menstrual periods if they have been deferred for inadequate hematocrit or hemoglobin in the past.
- Call 615-346-7864 or 1-800-448-3543 to schedule an apheresis donation.
48 HOURS PRIOR TO DONATION
- Stop using any aspirin or aspirin-containing products (Tylenol®, Advil® and Aleve® are some acceptable substitutes).
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
DAY PRIOR TO DONATION
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
- Eat a good meal, high in protein.
- Remember to take your daily multivitamin.
- Get a good night's sleep.
DAY OF DONATION
- Eat a good meal (include calcium-rich foods, such as dairy products) at least one hour before donating. Avoid fatty foods for 12 hours prior to donation.
- Remember to take your daily multivitamin.
- Take a calcium supplement, such as Tums®.
- Arrive at the donor center in plenty of time to avoid being hurried and excited during your physical exam.
- Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that provide arm exposure up to triceps area.
- Know your height and current weight.
- Bring your Red Cross donor card or a photo ID with you to the donor center.
